A practical guide to selecting, inspecting and using cargo-control equipment for everyday hauling, trailers, vehicles and transport applications.

A GOOD SECUREMENT SETUP STARTS BEFORE THE STRAP IS TIGHTENED.

Identify the load, confirm suitable anchor points, choose equipment intended for the application, and check every component before use. The safest setup is the one that is planned, inspected and rechecked—not improvised after the load is already moving.

PLAN THE LOAD

UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SECURING.

Before choosing a strap or fitting, look at the load as a complete system. Weight matters, but so do shape, surface, center of gravity and the way the cargo may shift during acceleration, braking and turns.

  • Estimate the load weight and identify heavy or high-center-of-gravity items.
  • Check for sharp edges, abrasive surfaces, heat, chemicals or moisture that may affect webbing or hardware.
  • Confirm where the load can safely accept pressure without being crushed or damaged.
  • Identify suitable anchor points on the vehicle, trailer or track system before routing the tie-down.

SELECT THE RIGHT SYSTEM

USE EQUIPMENT DESIGNED FOR THE APPLICATION.

Different loads call for different securement methods. Ratchet straps provide controlled tension for many cargo applications, cam buckle straps suit lighter-duty restraint, E-Track systems organize enclosed-trailer securement, and vehicle transport may require wheel, axle or application-specific tie-downs.

RATCHET STRAPS

For controlled tension where a positive mechanical tightening system is appropriate.

CAM BUCKLE STRAPS

For lighter loads where excessive tension could damage the cargo.

E-TRACK SYSTEMS

For enclosed trailers and cargo areas equipped with compatible track and fittings.

VEHICLE TIE-DOWNS

For motorcycles, ATVs, autos and equipment using appropriate attachment methods.

KNOW THE RATING.

Use the product's Working Load Limit (WLL) for planning—not its breaking strength. A securement system is only as strong as its lowest-rated component, including the strap, fitting, hardware and anchor point.

INSPECT BEFORE USE

DO NOT TRUST DAMAGED GEAR.

A quick inspection before every use can catch the problems most likely to reduce securement reliability.

WEBBING

Look for cuts, tears, heavy abrasion, melted areas, chemical damage or severe fraying.

STITCHING

Check load-bearing stitch patterns for broken, loose or pulled threads.

RATCHETS & BUCKLES

Confirm the mechanism operates smoothly and locks as intended.

HOOKS & FITTINGS

Check for bending, cracks, severe corrosion or deformation.

ANCHOR POINTS

Make sure the attachment point is secure and appropriate for the load.

LABELS & RATINGS

Use equipment only when its intended use and rating can be identified.

SECURE THE LOAD

ROUTE CLEANLY. TENSION EVENLY. PROTECT THE STRAP.

Securement is not just about pulling harder. A clean strap path and stable connection points matter just as much as tension.

  1. Place the cargo in a stable position before applying tie-downs.
  2. Attach fittings fully to suitable anchor points—avoid partial engagement or side-loading when the fitting is not designed for it.
  3. Route webbing as straight as practical and remove twists before tensioning.
  4. Use edge protection anywhere webbing crosses a sharp or abrasive surface.
  5. Tension the system enough to restrain movement without damaging the cargo or hardware.
  6. Secure loose strap tails so they cannot whip, drag or contact moving parts.

RECHECK IN TRANSIT

LOADS SETTLE. TENSION CHANGES.

Cargo can shift slightly after the vehicle starts moving, especially on uneven roads or when materials compress. Recheck the securement after initial movement and periodically during the trip, and inspect again after major changes in road, weather or load conditions.

  • Confirm each strap is still seated correctly.
  • Check that hooks and fittings remain fully engaged.
  • Retension only when necessary and safe to do so.
  • Stop using any component that shows new damage during the trip.

REPLACE WHEN NEEDED

SECUREMENT GEAR IS A WORKING TOOL—NOT A FOREVER TOOL.

Repeated loading, abrasion, UV exposure, dirt and weather all contribute to wear. Replace damaged or questionable equipment rather than trying to repair load-bearing webbing, hooks or mechanisms in ways not approved by the manufacturer.

COMMON MISTAKES

AVOID THESE SECUREMENT SHORTCUTS.

01USING BREAKING STRENGTH AS THE WORKING LIMIT

Plan with the stated WLL and the lowest-rated component in the system.

02RUNNING WEBBING OVER SHARP EDGES

Use appropriate edge protection to reduce cutting and abrasion risk.

03TYING KNOTS IN LOAD-BEARING WEBBING

Knots can damage webbing and alter how forces are carried.

04USING DAMAGED STRAPS “ONE MORE TIME”

Visible damage is a reason to stop and replace the component.

05MIXING INCOMPATIBLE FITTINGS AND ANCHORS

Hooks, track fittings and anchors should be fully compatible and properly engaged.

06USING TIE-DOWNS FOR LIFTING

Do not use tie-down products for lifting or overhead suspension unless they are specifically designed and rated for lifting.

30-SECOND CHECKLIST

BEFORE YOU MOVE, CONFIRM:

  • The load is stable and positioned correctly.
  • The selected equipment is intended for the application.
  • WLL and component ratings are appropriate for the planned setup.
  • Webbing, stitching, hardware and anchors are free of concerning damage.
  • Hooks and fittings are fully seated.
  • Webbing is not twisted and is protected from sharp edges.
  • Loose strap tails are secured.
  • The load will be rechecked after initial movement and during the trip.
